Celebrating the two years Mina Gems has been in business. Here is what I have learned.
1. Work, Work, Work.
Being self-employed is by no means the freedom people make it out to be. It is working until the work is done. If it takes 4 hours or 16 hours if you don’t do it no one else will.
I say this not because I am the most hardworking person here but because I am learning to work and work smart. Work till you see the company growing into what you envision it to be.
You know how you stalk your ex’s social media pages till you find out where his/her current went to kindergarten. In the same way, turn the Internet upside down looking for information you need.
Use all the materials at your disposal to learn as much as you can about the industry you are in. Look at what the ones who are prospering in your industry are doing. Google and YouTube are your friends. You have no excuse in this age to say you don’t know how something is done.
Most of us are usually working alone at the beginning because we have no teams. So sometimes we find ourselves amplifying problems we have as bigger than they real are. Or getting frustrated at where we want our brand to be as opposed to where it is.
Meeting other entrepreneurs will builds your confidence in your brand and a lot of times someone like minded may point out something that could benefit your business. You also learn you are not the only one going through the things you are going through.
4. A small number of followers doesn’t mean no sales
Mina Gems has been an online and word of mouth business for the last two years and we only now have 4000 followers across all social media platforms. That’s number is neither here nor there on social media these days. You know people who have some crazy number of followers. Now I learnt this from a good friend of mine.
The numbers don’t matter at the beginning; the reputation of
the brand you are building means more. It is true because by the time we had 2000
followers we had made a million Kenya shillings in sales. Make good content and
keep improving your product don’t compete with the number of followers.
5. You got this.
You really do. I will quote Winnie the pooh because he is
one smart bear
“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and
smarter than you think”
When you want to quit because you are overwhelmed and you are not making money building this empire that is currently a kiosk. Remember these words.
I am rooting for you.Keep grinding love.
